What is normal wear and tear?

Normal wear and tear is damage that naturally and inevitably occurs as a result of normal wear or ageing.

Normal wear and tear can include, but is not limited to:

  1. Colour fading: Clothes, especially those made from natural fibres, can fade over time due to exposure to sunlight, washing, and general wear. Fading is a normal part of the ageing process for fabrics.

  2. Slight Colour Changes: Over time, fabrics may experience slight changes in colour due to repeated washing, exposure to sunlight, and environmental factors. This is part of the ageing process for textiles.

  3. Loose Threads/Small holes: Over time, threads may become loose or start to fray or cause small holes. This is typical wear and tear, especially if the garment has been worn and washed multiple times.

  4. Worn Seams: Seams are areas of stress on clothing, and over time, they can weaken and show signs of wear. This can include stitches becoming loose or frayed.

  5. Thinning Fabric: Fabrics can become thinner over time, especially in areas that experience repeated friction or stretching, like elbows, knees, and seat areas.

  6. Frayed Edges: Fraying along edges, such as collars and cuffs, is common with clothing that has been worn and washed frequently.

  7. Stretching: Elastic materials, such as waistbands and cuffs, may lose some of their elasticity over time and with frequent use.

  8. Pilling: Pilling is the formation of small, fuzzy balls of fabric on the surface of clothing due to friction from wearing, washing, and rubbing against other materials. It's common in certain types of fabrics, especially knitwear.

  9. Light Fuzz: Some fabrics, especially those with a brushed surface, might develop a light fuzziness or texture over time, which is typical wear and tear.

  10. Slight Fading of Prints: Printed designs on clothing can fade slightly over time due to washing and exposure, which is generally considered normal wear.

  11. Shrinkage: Repeated laundering of clothes can cause items to shrink over time, most manufacturers will consider this when creating the garment, however, this is still a part of normal wear and tear.
